Advantages and disadvantages of hybrid rooftop tent

The hybrid tent is very popular with those who want a lot of space and a dry access to their car, but also want an aerodynamic package on the car. Hybrid rooftop tents are also characterised by their compact size when folded on the car. However, they are significantly more expensive and heavier than softshell tents.

Advantages of a hybrid roof tent.

Disadvantages of a hybrid rooftop tent.

  • The required space on the car roof is the same as for hardshell tents. In most cases, it is not possible to load more onto the roof.
  • Almost no possibility to leave bedding.
  • Hybrid rooftop tents cannot be used without a ladder, as this is part of the construction.
  • The tent folds out next to the car, so you need more space than with a hardshell tent. There should be room for the ladder and entrance on the side where the roof tent folds out.
  • Hybrid rooftop tents are usually more expensive than soft and hardshell rooftop tents.
  • Depending on their size, hybrid rooftop tents are heavier than softshell rooftop tents.
  • When storing your tent, make sure you can put it down without damaging it. The lid is sensitive to damage.
